What is WAP?
WAP stands for Wireless Application Protocol.
It is a application communication protocol which is used to access
services and information from handheld devices such as mobile
phones.

WAP protocol is designed for Micro Browsers (Similar to HTTP for
Web Browsers). Similar to HTML used by HTTP protocol, WAP protocol uses WML
(Web Markup Language).
The syntax for WML follows the XML 1.0 rules.
WAP is published by the WAP Forum, founded in 1997 by Ericsson, Motorola, Nokia, and Unwired Planet. Forum members now represent over 90% of the global handset market, as well as leading infrastructure providers, software developers and other organizations.
Each of the mobile devices which support WAP have a small browser called Micro Browser. Micro Browser is a small software module which requires minimum hardware, memory and CPU power. It can interpret WML syntax. Also equivalent to Javascript for Web Browsers, Micro Browser supports a reduced version of JavaScript called WMLScript. Also for showing images on the mobile devices, Micro Browser supports WBMP (Wireless Bitmap) image files.
WML in short is very small subset of HTML. Pages in WML are called Decks. Decks are constructed as a set of Cards. All the cards are declared using Card Element. Here’s the syntax for simple Card Element,
The wireless industry came up with the idea of WAP. The point of this standard was to show internet contents on wireless clients, like mobile phones.  WAP stands for Wireless Application Protocol

infoSync WAP and i-mode
– what difference? (7/02)
I’ve read this over and over and over
again, and I am starting to get really sick of it – it’s just like
how some people can’t seem to comprehend that WLAN and Bluetooth are
similar technologies, but don’t compete with each other head to
head. WAP sucks. i-mode rocks and has already killed WAP. Baloney!
Let’s get some facts about WAP and i-mode straight here…

Search and Navigation: the Key to the Adoption of the Wireless Web
(8/00)
The second coming of the Internet, the un-tethered
version, is in many ways walking a very similar path to its
predecessor. Companies, recognizing the potential of the Wireless
Web, are adding wireless real estate at a fevered pitch –
determined not to be left behind. This zeal bodes well for the
future of this new medium, but it does introduce a problem that any
wired Web surfer can relate to. The more content that is introduced,
the harder it is to find what you are looking for.
Approval
Of 3G Specs Reshapes The Industry (5/00)
The standards crucial
to the rollout of 3G services have not been cast in stone, but
rather molded from clay. They have been designed for maximum
usefulness, honed carefully by many hands, then fired and finished.
By now the standards that support advanced applications for wireless
networks have been approved on a regional and international basis
and are available to vendors for the manufacturing process. Although
these standards have been in the works for months, this spring 131
specs finally reached publication.
