news-AMD Releases Radeon HD 6990M Graphics Solution for Mobile Computers
Advanced Micro Devices on Monday introduced its new graphics processing unit (GPU) for notebooks designed for gamers. The company claims that its new Radeon HD 6990M graphics solution is the highest-performing single-chip graphics adapter for mobile personal computers.
AMD Radeon HD 6990M graphics solution for laptops is based on the company’s latest Cayman architecture featuring VLIW4 technology. The novelty sports 1120 stream processing units, 56 texture units, 32 raster operation units as well as 256-bit GDDR5 memory interface. AMD’s flagship mobile GPU fully supports DirectX 11 capabilities, OpenGL 4.1, OpenCL 1.1, hardware-accelerated playback of high-definition video formats (including stereo-3D formats) and other modern features.
As expected, the Radeon HD 6990M fully supports AMD’s dual-graphics technology, which ensures that graphics chips coupled with AMD’s Fusion integrated graphics solution get a speed boost. Additionally, CrossFireX, Eyefinity 6 and other exclusive features from AMD are supported.
It is noteworthy that the Radeon HD 6990M graphics solution is a single-chip product. By contrast, desktop Radeon HD 6990 graphics card is a dual-chip flagship solution that offers radically higher performance than the Radeon HD 6990M. Nonetheless, the latter is still among the faster notebook GPUs at the planer.
