UMTS

The Third Generation mobile communication system UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System) is the successor to GSM. Through more powerful radio technology (including more bandwidth and CDMA transmission methods), any content (e.g. multimedia applications, downloads from the internet, videoconferencing) can be transmitted at a high transmission rate. This opens the door to a variety of new services in the future.
The data transmission rates specified in the UMTS system range from 144 kbps for the highly mobile user (maximum speed 500 km/h) through to 2 Mbps for quasi-stationary operation. UMTS data devices will from the outset be multi-mode capable, i.e. they will also be able to use the GSM network for voice and data connections.
